Asphalt, metal, or TPO: choosing the right roof in Central Texas

Every roofing material is a set of tradeoffs between cost, lifespan, and how it handles Texas sun and hail. Here is the honest comparison we give at kitchen tables.

Asphalt shingles

The workhorse of Texas roofs. Architectural shingles cost the least up front, install fast, and look right on almost any home. Typical lifespan runs 25 to 30 years here. The tradeoff is hail: standard shingles bruise, which is why we recommend impact-resistant Class 4 shingles in Hail Alley. They cost more per square but resist hail dramatically better and can earn insurance discounts.

Metal roofing

Standing seam metal is the longest-lived option we install: 40 to 50 plus years, excellent hail and wind performance, and it reflects Texas sun instead of absorbing it. Upfront cost is the highest of the three, but over the life of the home it often wins. It is also the signature Hill Country look, like the Driftwood projects in our gallery.

TPO and flat-roof membranes

For flat and low-slope roofs, single-ply membranes like TPO and EPDM, and modified bitumen systems, are the standard. They are watertight, energy-efficient in white finishes, and typically last 20 to 30 years. Most of our TPO work is commercial, but plenty of Austin homes have a flat section that deserves the same quality.
